Functional Medicine

Functional Medicine is an integrative science-based approach that shifts from the traditional disease focused medical care to a model of care that focuses on wellness and disease prevention and addresses the biochemical and genetic uniqueness of each patient.

Functional Medicine differs from conventional medicine in that it involves understanding the origins, treatment and prevention of chronic complex diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, mental illness, autoimmune diseases, and cancer. It looks upstream to consider the complex web of interactions in the patient’s history, physiology and lifestyle that can lead to illness. The unique genetic makeup of each patient is considered along the unique aspects of each patient’s physiology and psychology.

It has been estimated that it takes as long as 50 years to incorporate emerging research in basic science into a conventional medical practice. It is the aim of functional medicine to close that gap by evaluating, assessing and incorporating emerging research in a safe and efficient matter.

By integrating the best medical practices from conventional medicine with evidence based therapies that are sometimes considered “alternative” or “integrative”, Functional Medicine puts the focus on wellness and prevention. It utilizes nutrition, diet and exercise along with the latest in laboratory testing, botanical and nutritional supplements, detoxification programs and stress management techniques.
