WHAT IS ACUPUNCTURE?
Acupuncture originated in China more than 2000 years ago. It is one of the oldest and most commonly used medical procedures in the world. Acupuncture is believed to restore health to the mind and body by balancing the body’s energy and by maintaining the normal flow of energy. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the energy is referred to as “qi”. Qi travels through a network of channels called meridians. Any disruption in the normal flow of energy can cause problems with our physical, emotional or mental well being.

Acupuncture is performed by inserting very fine needles in selected points in the body to help restore the normal flow of qi and thereby help restore health. It is used for both prevention and treatment of many illnesses as well as musculoskeletal pain conditions.

WHAT IS INVOLVED IN AN ACUPUNCTURE SESSION?
Acupuncture treatments usually consist of several weekly sessions, each lasting about 30 minutes. Fine, sterile, single-use needles are used and their insertion usually causes only minimal discomfort. The patient may notice a deep aching sensation once the target point is reached. Generally only 3-15 needles are placed. The needles are normally left in for 20-30 minutes. Some patients may experience a feeling of spaciness, relaxation or even fatigue after a treatment. This may require you to wait in the office until it resolves. The number of treatments required depends on the nature of the condition being treated. For problems of recent onset, only 1 or 2 treatments may be needed, however, for more long standing problems, ten or more sessions may be necessary to achieve optimal results.
